the Triple Conjunction of the Mortal, the Human, and the Divine

"In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans; In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem." (DAN 9:1-2) That is said to be from 605 to 536 B.C., until the return from Babylon began. But DANIEL is misunderstood by the general class of Bible scholars: some say he lived at the time of which he wrote, the sixth century B.C.; others suggest he only used that century as a figure, a convenient disguise by which to speak discreetly about events in the early second century: compiling stories from an earlier time in one book depicting faith and prophecy. The arguments are numerous: that, Daniel is in error on the titles and orders of who begot whom; that, the currency of the language seems more fitting to the modern date, especially as newer words, some not available in the sixth century B.C., are found in the text manuscript; that, no books prior to the later date have referred to Daniel's writings, but many afterward; and, it has been credited, that, DANIEL does not properly fit his prophecies to the intervening centuries. These points quail as Daniel's interpretations of the kings' dreams, and subsequently his predictions, are proven insightful ...

"I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house, and ... I saw a dream which made me afraid, ... behold, a watcher and an holy Notice here that, seven times, may mean seven months: fingernails snap clean off after that, and he likely didn't get a haircut before being cast out. However, history fits a more likely path: In 562 B.C., King Nebuchadnezzar (may have been) deposed, declared dead and mad, and deported into the wilds. In the next seven years, a son, a son-in-law, and a grandson served briefly as kings: two were murdered, and thus his branches were cut off. Returning in 555 B.C., as Nabonidus, an old man of the same age and authority, a moon worshipper, and temple restorer (as he had done), he (may have) sought out his former counselors privately and convinced them of his true identity, and returned to power directly as the usurper. His behavior was as unprecedented as of madness: he set Belshazzar, his (remaining) son, as king in all things but ceremony, and returned to conquer and reside in the wilds of Arabia. He came again to Babylon, before the incursion of 539 B.C., but lost to Cyrus when Belshazzar was killed, (and another, possibly the queen mother). His own life was preserved, as the stump: Cyrus sent him to rule over Carmania. And we have from cave #4 of the Dead Sea scrolls, The Prayer of Nabonidus, describing his seven years in the wild.

But let us dispense with scholarly misunderstanding, for in this is a crucial determination: Daniel, you see, was not only wise and discerning: he was obedient. And in his later dreams he was told to secrete and seal the visions -- "But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased." (DAN 12:4) We'd almost wonder why Daniel would bother with such instruction, but everyone has a notion of immortality, and perhaps this was Daniel's: that his writings would become known after the end time. And so we may presume he did: Perhaps he took the middle portion and rewrote it in the other language he knew well, Aramaic. And maybe he put the two portions of scrolls in clay bricks, and imprinted the bricks with his Babylonian signet, and dry-baked the bricks, and stashed them in the temple in Jerusalem: until the time of the end. And he presumed whoever considered the scrolls would have some knowledge of history, and might understand the accuracies of the predicted times -- "And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days." (DAN 12:7,11-13) Three and two-thirds centuries (a year of 365 years) later, early in 170 B.C., the ruling king, Antiochus Epiphanes (literally, "the appearing mudbank" -- cf. the man clothed in linen, upon the waters of the river -- but usually taken more profanely, "the ostentatious imposer" (a euphemism), and nick-named, Epimanes, "mad", for he declared himself, the visible representative of God), to whom the lengthy prophecy is said to point, returning from a military venture against Egypt, and discovering a coup attempt made while he had been gone from Jerusalem, himself sacked the temple, and removed all its gold, silver, precious stones, and scrolls. Thus the time of the end fell on Jerusalem, that Daniel's scrolls should be discovered. Whoever rescued the scrolls from their hiding place, and opened their brick seals, may have attempted a first rendering into second-century Hebrew and Aramaic, and then sealed again those scrolls, for there may have been further chapters and instructions for their re-sealing: that is to say, Daniel's notion of immortality was not unique to Daniel, and perhaps we have seen only some of Daniel's scrolls.

And thus we have determined a fulcrum-point of time -- "Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river." (DAN 12:5) Concomitant (as a mudbank in a river) to its course, beyond Daniel's own, the time of the end (may be) the temporal reference point at which prophecy is unsealed, and whence computed -- "And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end." (DAN 12:9) There is no imperative for believing this date ca. January, 170 B.C., but that events which follow confirm a new schedule: Three years later the same king returned to the temple proper, and in due course set up a bogus statue of himself. The Jews rebelled, but strove another three years to recover the temple for their own purposes. Whether this exactly fits the times and days of Daniel's prophecy depends on scarce historical evidences, and considering the minutiae of religious feelings and doctrines, may never be ascertained by all interested parties. But the prophecy runs deeper from this same point onward, for no mere personal desire reinstated its honors.

Let us side-step historic time, and examine the major import of the ages: the coming of the Messiah, which Daniel himself specified -- "Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks:" (DAN 9:25) We have on record: "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven ... and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: ... And God made two great lights; he made the stars also." (GEN 1:14-16: excerpted) So we have a purpose for the sun, moon, and stars. And in the New Testament, Christ Jesus declared, "I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star." (REV 22:16) Now, because time is as cycles of time, (a thing defined of itself), so, prophetic days (by the sun's phase), and months (by the moon's phase, 29.531 days), and years (by the fixed-stars' phase, 365.256 days), may refer again among themselves. Jesus's reference to the morning star is peculiar: the morning star is usually taken to mean the planet Venus, although any planet visible just before sunrise may be so meant. Jesus was particular about the bright and morning star: this is Venus, in any case. The same morning star is some time later an evening star and again a morning star: hence it has a day cycle (or synodic period: for Venus, this is 1.59867 of our Earth-years). But remember that the planetary calculations are derived from today's astronomers', concerned for their reputations as much as for their science: their numerations are verifiable by repeating the exact observations and calculation, hence their precision may be erroneously extreme: the next astronomer doing his own observations may give different though similar numbers, just as precisely, without regard for comparative accuracy. Hence we must regard all numbers as good.

Now we're ready for the calculations. In the final vision, DANIEL leaves us one fixed time and two dates: three and a half times (meaning, fixed times, as synodic months or years), and 1290 days and 1335 days. Letting months be for an individual man because the moon is one, and years, for science or mankind collectively because the stars are many: If we take these as all referring to the Messiah, or Christ-idea, and ratiocinate days as morning star days, from the fulcrum-point of time ca. January, 170 B.C., we arrive at the following moments: ca. April, 5 B.C. (by months) or ca. October, A.D. 1874 (by years) (1874-5), and ca. May, A.D. 1893 (1892-4), and ca. April, A.D. 1965 (1964-6). The parenthetic ranges are approximately what we don't know about the hour of the day (and seasonal eccentricities), but these dates can be brought to adjustment by Christians of today with some historical certainty. Jesus, Christ, may be best known to have been born ca. April, 5 B.C. -- a recent exegesis points to a major comet in early 5 B.C., and to rare conjunctions of the planets Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars, ending fourteen months previous, which would have alerted the oriental wise men. Christian Science, or the divine Comforter, made its public debut in SCIENCE AND HEALTH, ca. October, 1875. The Mother Church of Christ, Scientist, which is to adsorb and absorb all Christian churches in our land by the end of this century, was erected hurriedly in 1894, (corresponding to DANIEL's "abomination that maketh desolate" -- but this may refer to the laying of the corner-stone on May 21, 1894, to flying the state and national flags within the edifice, and to organ grinding and posturing for contributions). By 1967, the copyrights on SCIENCE AND HEALTH and the CHURCH MANUAL had expired all extensions; the elders (who'd been children in 1895) made a special supplication for the continuity of the Christian Science Movement; and the students of the final (the fifth) generation began with repentance consideration for their (new) tower of the Church Universal and Triumphant. Whence by double entendre on, times, we find our two advents of the Christ.

It is worth noting the details that we may fill-in. While the baby Jesus enjoyed a nine month gestation, SCIENCE AND HEALTH enjoyed nine years, from its certainty in A.D. 1866: again the ratio of months and years -- and fourteen, years, previous to the second, birth, there was a rare conjunction of four planets immediately over the sun, with the moon directly under, both at evening (9/4/61) and next morning (9/5), which befits John's, "And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:". (REV 12:1) If the baby Jesus had special moments corresponding to 1290 and 1335 days, after proportioning back from years to months, these might have been at the fullness of baby teeth (or specifically the canines at one year and a half, and the cessation of nursing), and the eruption of adult teeth following the first seven years. At "twelve years old" ca. A.D. 2023 or 2010, we may find SCIENCE AND HEALTH dallying, challenging the mathematicians and scientists; at "33.3" ca. A.D. 2288, the ultimate baptism and wilderness experience. If the end of Jesus' mission was estimably 37 years -- the crucifixion with a lunar eclipse on Friday, April 3, A.D. 33 -- and proportion that from months to years, we arrive ca. December, A.D. 2331 (2331-2), for the lifting of the cross-and-crown logo from SCIENCE AND HEALTH, and the restoration of the crown-and-scepter: This "second death" (REV 20) begins the thousand years reigning with God. It follows 42 years (41.67, an hour watch) of incredible demonstrations: raising parents from their graves, meeting Jesus and Mrs. Eddy, reforming continents, swimming through space, crossing instantly to the moon, ... but, as Jesus pointed out, "Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh." (MATT 25:13)

We may further fit these times into our knowledge of Bible times. From the fulcrum-point to the second, crucifixion, is 2500 years (2500-1) -- and as each thousand years is a day with the Lord (II PET 3:8), Creation's final 2.5 days: from the evening hour (at 3.5 days) of the fourth day when God finished making the sun, moon, and stars, and so fixed the fulcrum end of time, through the sixth day to the morning hour of the seventh day -- the beginning of the seventh millennium. Mankind's restoration of holiness began ca. 3670 B.C.. The new-Adam dream of projects cruising the cosmo-net, begins at 10 P.M., the late evening third, of the seventh "day": ca. A.D. 2996. And one man's restoration is 6000 months, or 485 years: a shy 70 sevens (DAN 9).

Daniel's times might also apply to Mercury, and to Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Mercury, like Venus, is a day star: both stay near the sun. If we calculate with Mercury we find dates after 138 B.C. and A.D. 236, which may refer to the messianic fervor among the rabbis of that era. Saturn, of those that do not stay near the sun, is the slowest moving among the fixed stars: it's synodic period is 1.03513 years. The Jews have borrowed Saturn to represent Abraham's lineage, as the wanderer among the multitudes, the gentiles: the assigned time of 3.5 times Saturn-years (and 1290 and 1335 days re-proportioned to 1335 and 1382 days) is 1946.6 (and 1965.8 and 2040.3) which seems to point to the new state of Israel (and a pivotal war, and their blessing to come); but therein some Jews may err: Jesus suggested that the Jews had strayed from Abraham (JOHN 8): by merely preferring the obvious the Jews subjected themselves to the unseen effect of preference: the outer planets, then unknown Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto and Pluton, at the end of our solar system, are slower and dimmer yet than Saturn. The last two may refer to Satan: Pluto's synodic period is 1.00405 years, giving 1883.1 (and 1901.7 and 1973.9), and Pluton's, at the same orbital distance but retrograde, is 0.9960 years, giving 1866.6 (and 1885.1 and 1956.7). To such descendants the abominations of desolation, in 1885, and 1901, might be the publications of the English Revised and the American Standard Bibles.

"But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand, [for it is the image of strife-withstood, standing in the edifice of the second-sight, as of a man naked, covered with short gashes, as the prophets of Baal used to do; and the Directors withheld knowledge of it since it was stood up, unto the seeing of it]) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains: And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house: And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment. But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter [neither on the Sabbath]. For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be. And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days. And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not: For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things. But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. [Dullness shall continue a brief space, observing a common solar total eclipse with flares during a meteor shower] And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch." (MARK 13:14-37: annotated)

And so we find coincident onto the fulcrum of time, the irreparable separation of Jewish saga, Christian sanity, and divine Science: a little on the top, which never balances, and much to the right and the left, which do.

AFTER COMMENT: The literal interpretation of Scripture serves little use to contemporary man, his circumstances, means, methods, and language so removed from context. Yet an occasional gem of prophecy may be found, and we believe this may be one, the grand one scoping all of humanity, and the everlasting. As Nebuchadnezzar himself found, so may we find: the heavens do rule. /RKP
